Resynchronization
After replacing the battery in your transmitter, or if
only the instant alarm works, the transmitter needs to be
resynchronized to the receiver. Do this by pressing and
holding both the button with the lock symbol and the
button with the unlock symbol at the same time for
about eight seconds. You must be within range of
the vehicle.
Once the transmitter has been resynchronized, the horn
will chirp and the exterior lamps will flash once. The
system should now operate properly.
Trunk
CAUTION:
It can be dangerous to drive with the trunk lid
open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can
come into your vehicle. You can't see or smell
CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death.
If you must drive with the trunk lid open or if
electrical wiring or other cable connections must
pass through the seal between the body and the
trunk lid:
Make sure all other windows are shut.
Turn the fan on your heating or cooling
system to its highest speed with the setting
on any airflow selection except RECIRC.
That will force outside air into your vehicle.

Comfort Controls
This section tells you how to operate your
comfort controls.
With this system, you can control the heating, cooling
and ventilation in your vehicle. Your vehicle also has a
flow
-through ventilation system described later in
this section.
Dual Automatic ComforTemp
Climate Control
Your vehicle has the dual automatic ComforTemp
climate control system. The following information tells
you how it works.TEMP (Temperature): To adjust the temperature, press
the TEMP arrows. If you want a warmer temperature,
press the red arrow. If you want a cooler temperature,
press the blue arrow. The temperature setting is shown
in the display.
FAN: If you want the fan to run at a lower speed,
press the down arrow on the FAN button. The fan speed
will decrease with every press of the down arrow until
the lowest speed is reached. If you want to increase the
fan speed, press the up arrow on the FAN button. The
fan indicators will also be shown on the display.
Pressing this button will display the current setting.
AIRFLOW: Press the up or down arrow to change the
direction of the airflow. The available choices are FLOOR,
FLOOR
-MID, MID and WINDSHIELD-FLOOR.
If the system is set for AUTO, pressing an up or down
arrow will display the current airflow direction, the
temperature setting and the fan speed.
If the up arrow is selected while in the FRONT defrost
mode, the system will direct the air toward the
mid
-position. If the down arrow is selected while in the
FRONT defrost mode, the system will direct the air
toward the floor, and the FRONT defrost mode will
cancel. The arrows will also be shown in the display.

AUTO (Automatic Climate Control): Press the AUTO
button when you want the system to automatically
maintain a set temperature. When the system is set for
automatic operation, air will come from the floor ducts,
instrument panel outlets or windshield outlets depending
on the temperature inside the vehicle, the outside
temperature and the sun load. Sun and temperature
sensors automatically adjust the air temperature, the
airflow direction and the fan speed to maintain your
comfort setting. The system may supply cooler air to the
side of the vehicle toward the sun. Be careful not to put
anything over the sensors on top of the dash.
To find your preferred temperature setting, start with the
system in AUTO mode and the temperature set at 75F
(24C). Give the vehicle about 20 minutes to stabilize,
and adjust your the temperature setting, if necessary,
using the TEMP button. The display will show the
selected temperature, fan speed and airflow direction for
a few seconds, and then it will display the outside
temperature. If you choose a temperature setting of 60F
(15C), the system will remain at the maximum cooling
setting and fan speed. If you choose a temperature
setting of 90F (33C), the system will remain at the
maximum heat setting and fan speed. Choosing either
maximum setting will not cause the system to heat or
cool any faster.In cold weather, the system will delay turning the fan
on high, to avoid blowing cold air into the vehicle. The
length of the delay depends on the engine coolant
temperature and the outside temperature. Pressing the
FAN, AIR FLOW or FRONT buttons will override
this delay, turn off the AUTO setting and change the
fan speed.
Air Conditioning
On hot days, open the windows long enough to let hot
inside air escape. This reduces the time it takes for your
vehicle to cool down. Then keep your windows closed
for the air conditioner to work its best.
On very hot days, the automatic system will enter the
recirculation mode and the temperature door will be
positioned at the full cold position for maximum cooling
for as long as necessary to reach the set temperature.
You can choose the extreme temperature setting of
60F (15C), but the system will not cool any faster.

To program a personal choice comfort control setting,
do the following:
1. Choose a climate control setting for the driver and
if desired, for the passenger. See ªDual Automatic
ComforTemp Climate Controlº and ªPassenger
Climate Controlº earlier in this section.
2. Locate the memory buttons on the driver's door panel.
3. Press a memory button (1 or 2) until you hear two
beeps. The beeps confirm that your selection has
been saved and can now be recalled.
Follow these steps each time you want to change the
stored settings. For more information on the memory
feature, see ªMemory Seat and Mirrorsº in the Index.
Ventilation System
For mild outside temperatures when little heating or
cooling is needed, use VENT in manual mode to direct
outside air through your vehicle. Air will flow through
any of the outlets depending on outside temperatures
and climate control settings.
Your vehicle's flow
-through ventilation system supplies
outside air into the vehicle when it's moving. When the
vehicle is not moving, you can get outside air to flow
through your vehicle by pressing VENT and then using
the AIR FLOW button to select a mode and the FAN
button to select a fan speed.
Change the direction of
airflow by adjusting the
louvered vents.
You have rear passenger
ComforTemp outlets that
you can use to change the
direction of the airflow to
the rear seating area. The
temperature is controlled by
the front passenger.

If you drive regularly in steep country, or if you're
planning to visit there, here are some tips that can make
your trips safer and more enjoyable.
Keep your vehicle in good shape. Check all fluid
levels and also the brakes, tires, cooling system
and transaxle. These parts can work hard on
mountain roads.
Know how to go down hills. The most important
thing to know is this: let your engine do some of the
slowing down. Shift to a lower gear when you go
down a steep or long hill.
CAUTION:
If you don't shift down, your brakes could get
so hot that they wouldn't work well. You would
then have poor braking or even none going
down a hill. You could crash. Shift down to let
your engine assist your brakes on a steep
downhill slope.
CAUTION:
Coasting downhill in NEUTRAL (N) or with the
ignition off is dangerous. Your brakes will have to
do all the work of slowing down. They could get
so hot that they wouldn't work well. You would
then have poor braking or even none going
down a hill. You could crash. Always have your
engine running and your vehicle in gear when
you go downhill.
Know how to go uphill. Drive in the highest
gear possible.
Stay in your own lane when driving on two
-lane
roads in hills or mountains. Don't swing wide or cut
across the center of the road. Drive at speeds that let
you stay in your own lane.
As you go over the top of a hill, be alert. There could be
something in your lane, like a stalled car or an accident.
You may see highway signs on mountains that warn of
special problems. Examples are long grades, passing or
no
-passing zones, a falling rocks area or winding
roads. Be alert to these and take appropriate action.

4-41 When You Are Ready to Leave After
Parking on a Hill
1. Apply your regular brakes and hold the pedal down
while you:
start your engine,
shift into a gear, and
release the parking brake.
2. Let up on the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer is clear of the chocks.
4. Stop and have someone pick up and store the chocks.
Maintenance When Trailer Towing
Your vehicle will need service more often when you're
pulling a trailer. See the Maintenance Schedule for more
on this. Things that are especially important in trailer
operation are automatic transaxle fluid (don't overfill),
engine oil, drive belt, cooling system and brake system.
Each of these is covered in this manual, and the Index
will help you find them quickly. If you're trailering, it's
a good idea to review this information before you start
your trip.
Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and bolts
are tight.
Engine Cooling When Trailer Towing

When you decide it's safe to lift the hood, here's what

CAUTION:
An electric engine cooling fan under the hood
can start up even when the engine is not running
and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and
tools away from any underhood electric fan.
