INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS29
Front and side air bags warning light The warning light comes on
for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. Switching on of this warning light, with the engine running, is accompanied byan audible signal and a message onthe multifunction display indicating afault in the air bags.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
Seat belt not fastened warning light* When the ignition is switched
on, the warning light comes on when the driver has not fastened his seat belt. Engine autodiagnostics warning light This comes on each time the
ignition is switched on. If it comes on when the engine is run-ning, it indicates a malfunction in theinjection, ignition or emission control
system. There is a risk of damage to
your catalytic converter.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer rapidly.
Low fuel level warning light When the warning light first
comes on, you have enough fuel to drive at least 35 miles (50 km) (the tank capac-
ity is approximately 47 litres (10.3 gal-lons)).
Coolant temperature indicator light
Ð When the needle is in zone (A), the
temperature is correct.
Ð When the needle is in zone ( B), the
temperature is too high. The central
STOP warning light flashes.
You must stop immediately.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
Dynamic stability control (ESP/ASR) warning light This comes on for a few seconds each time the igni-
tion is switched on. If the warning light remains on or comes on with the engine running, it isaccompanied by an audible signal andthe message "ESP/ASR not opera-
tional" on the multifunction display;
contact a PEUGEOT dealer. With the engine running and the vehi- cle moving, it flashes when the systemcomes into operation (if there is a dif-ference between the trajectory fol-lowed by the vehicle and that desiredby the driver). It comes on permanently when the system is disarmed.
* According to destination.
Passenger air bag disarming indicatorlight*
Switching on of this indicator light is accompanied by an audible signal andthe message "Passenger air bag
disarmed" on the multifunction dis-
play. If the passenger air bag is disarmed, the indicator light switches on andremains on. In all cases, if the warning light flashes,
contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
Battery charge warning light This can indicate any of the
following situations:
Ð faulty operation of the charging circuit,
Ð loose battery or starter terminals, Ð a cut or slack alternator belt,Ð an alternator fault.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

CHECKING LEVELS Engine Oil level check Carry out this check regularly and top up between oil changes
(the
maximum consumption is 0,5 litre per1,000 km). The check must be carried out with the vehicle level and the engine cold.
There are two levelmarks on the dipstick: A= maximum.
B = minimum. Viscosity grade selectionThe oil selected must always meet the
manufacturerÕs requirements. Oil filter Change the cartridge regularly in accordance with the recommenda-tions of the servicing schedule. Used oil
Avoid any prolonged contact of used oil with the skin. Do not discard used oil down drains or on the ground.
To maintain the reliability of the engines and emission control sys-tems, the use of additives in the oil isprohibited. Brake fluid reservoir
Ð The level must always be above the
DANGER mark on the tank.
Ð In the event of a significant drop in the level, contact a PEUGEOT dealer
immediately. Fluid change
Ð Always to be carried out at the inter-
vals given in the manufacturer's servicing schedule.
Ð Use fluids approved by the manu- facturer which comply with DOT4standard.
Coolant reservoir Use a coolant approved by the manu-
facturer. When the engine is warm, the coolant temperature is controlled by the
engine fan. As this fan can operatewith the ignition key removed andbecause the cooling circuit is pres-surised, wait at least an hour after
switching off the engine before carry-ing out any work. In the event of a breakdown and to avoid any risk of burns, unscrew thecap two turns to let the pressure drop. When the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and top up the level.
Oil change: in accordance with the
manufacturer's servicing schedule.
Ð Dipstick: never exceed the maximum mark A.
Ð Instrument panel gauge.

TOWING A TRAILER,
CARAVAN, BOAT etc.
Only use original PEUGEOT tow bars that have been tested andapproved from the design stage of
your vehicle. The tow bar must be fit-
ted by a PEUGEOT dealer. The tow bar must be fitted by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Your vehicle is basically designed for transporting people and luggage but it
may also be used for towing a trailer. Driving with a trailer subjects the towing vehicle to more significant stress and itsdriver must be particularly careful. Air density decreases with altitude, thus
reducing engine performance. Above
1 000 metres, the maximum towing load
must be reduced by 10 % for every
1 000 metres of altitude. Driving advice Distribution of loads:
Distribute the
load in the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as possible to the axleand the nose weight approaches themaximum permitted without exceeding it. Cooling: Towing a trailer on a slope
increases the temperature of the coolant. As the fan is electrically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependent onthe engine speed.
On the contrary, use a high gear to lower the engine speed, and reduceyour speed. The maximum towing load on a long slope depends on the gradient and theoutside temperature. In all cases, pay attention to the coolant temperature. If the warning light comes on, stop the
vehicle and switch off the engine assoon as possible. Tyres:
Check the tyre pressures of the
towing vehicle and of the trailer, observing the recommended pres-sures. Braking: Towing increases the brak-
ing distance. Lights: Check the electrical signalling
on the trailer.Side wind: Take into acount the
increased sensitivity to side wind.
