2. Fully extend the shoulder belt to put it
in the lock mode. When the belt is
then retracted slightly, it cannot be ex-
tended.
To hold the convertible seat securely,
make sure the belt is in the lock mode
before letting the belt retract.3. While pressing the convertible seat firmly against the seat cushion and
seatback, let the shoulder belt retract
as far as it will go to hold the convert-
ible seat securely.CAUTION
Push and pull the child restraint sys-
tem in different directions to be sure
it is secure. Follow all the installation
instructions provided by its manufac-

1. Fold down the cup holder, unfasten the Velcro that attaches the anchor
bracket cover, and lift the cover.2. Route the top strap through the sloton top of the seat, pass the strap
through the seat, then latch the hook
onto the anchor bracket.
Close the cover and return the cup

Do not continue hill climbing or
hard towing for a long time in theª2º or ªLº position. This may causesevere automatic transmission dam-

(f) Backing up
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. With the brake pedal held down with your foot, shift the selector lever to the
ªRº position.
NOTICE
Never shift into reverse while the ve-
hicle is moving.
(g) Parking
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. With the brake pedal pressed down, fully depress the parking brake pedal
to apply the parking brake securely.
3. With the brake pedal pressed down, shift the selector lever to the ªPº posi-
tion.
CAUTION
Never attempt to move the selector
lever into ªPº position under any cir-
cumstances while the vehicle is mov-
ing. Serious mechanical damage and
loss of vehicle control may result.
(h) Good driving practice
If the transmission repeatedly shifts up
and down between third gear and over-
drive when climbing a gentle slope, the
overdrive should be turned off. Be sure
to turn the switch on immediately after-
ward.
When towing a trailer, in order to main-
tain engine braking efficiency, do not
use overdrive.
CAUTION
Always keep your foot on the brake
pedal while stopped with the engine
running. This prevents the vehicle
from creeping.
NOTICE
Do not hold the vehicle on an up-grade with the accelerator pedal. Itcan cause the transmission to over-heat. Always use the brake pedal or
parking brake.

SHIFTING BETWEEN ªH2º AND ªH4º
To shift from ªH2º to ªH4º, reduce the
vehicle speed to less than 80 km/h (50
mph) and move the front drive control
lever.
If you have trouble shifting in cold weath-
er, reduce the vehicle speed or stop the
vehicle and reshift.
CAUTION
Never move the front drive control
lever if wheels are slipping. Stop the
slipping or spinning before shifting.
To shift from ªH4º to ªH2º, simply move
the front drive control lever.
This can be done at any speed.
If the indicator light does not go off when
you shift the transfer into ªH2º, drive
straight ahead while accelerating or decel-
erating, or drive forward or backward in a
short distance.
SHIFTING BETWEEN ªH4º AND ªL4º
To shift between ªH4º and ªL4º, stop
the vehicle and put the transmission in
ªNº. With the brake pedal depressed,
move the front drive control lever. SHIFTING BETWEEN ª2WDº AND ª4HIº
To shift from ª2WDº to ª4HIº,
reduce
the vehicle speed to less than 100 km/h
(62 mph) and push in the ª2WD/4HIº but-
ton.
If the ª4HIº (high speed four±wheel drive)
indicator light flashes when you push in
the ª2WD/4HIº button, this reminds you
that the transfer mode is not securely in
ª4HIº mode. Drive straight ahead while
accelerating or decelerating.
If the ª4HIº (high speed four±wheel drive)
indicator light flashes and the buzzer
sounds when you push in the ª2WD/4HIº
button, this reminds you that the transfer
mode is not in ª4HIº mode. Stop the ve-
hicle or reduce the vehicle speed to less
than 100 km/h (62 mph). Push the button
to turn it off, then once again to turn it
back on.
CAUTION
Never push the ª2WD/4HIº button if
the wheels are slipping. Stop the slip-
ping or spinning before shifting.
To shift from ª4HIº to ª2WDº, push the
ª2WD/4HIº button again to turn it off.
This can be done at any speed.
If the ª4HIº (high speed four±wheel drive)
indicator light flashes when you push the
ª2WD/4HIº button again to return to ª2WDº
mode, this reminds you that the transfer
mode is not securely in ª2WDº mode.
Drive straight ahead while accelerating or
decelerating, or drive forward or backward
in a short distance.

Type C auxiliary box is equipped with
a coin holder and cassette tape/com-
pact disc holder.
1. Coin holder: To use it, push coins down into the holder.
2. Cassette tape/compact disc holder: To use it, raise the upper tray.
The plates for the cassette tape/com-
pact disc are detachable.
Type D (under the rear seatÐonly when
the bottom cushion is up)
Cup holders
The cup holder is designed for holding
cups or drink±cans securely. To use
them, observe the following illustra-
tions.
CAUTION
Do not place anything else other
than cups or drink±cans on the cup
holder, as such items may be
thrown about and possibly injure
people in the vehicle during sudden
braking or in an accident.
To reduce the chance of injury in
case of an accident or a sudden
stop while driving, keep the cup
holder closed when it is not in use.
NOTICE
Type A onlyÐAs this holder is de-
signed for holding soft cups only, donot place too heavy a cup, drink±canor bottle in it.
