Before c losing the d oor, make sure that the b elts a re retrac ted p rop -
erly to avoid c atc hing the b elt web b ing in the d oor .
Rear center seatbelt on wagon model
WARNING
Fastening the seatbelt with the webbing twisted can increase
the risk or severity of injury in an accident. When fastening the
belt after it is pulled out from the retractor, especially wheninserting the connector ’s tongue plate into the mating buckle (on
right-hand side), always check that the webbing is not twisted. Be sure to fasten both tongue plates to the respective
buckles. If the seatbelt is used only as a shoulder belt (with theconnector ’s tongue plate not fastened to the connector ’s buckle
on the right-hand side), it cannot properly restrain the wearer in
position in an accident, possibly resulting in serious injury ordeath.

n Emergency disarming
If you c annot d isarm the system using the transmitt er (i.e. the trans-
mitter is lost, b roken or the transmitter b attery i s too weak), you c an
d isarm the system without using the transmitter.
To d isarm the system:
1. Unloc k the d oor with the key and then op en the d o or.
2. The alarm will sound .
3. Insert the key into the ig nition switc h and c yc le it from the “LOCK ”
to the “ON ” p osition three (3) times within 5 seconds.
Sounding a panic alarm
To ac tivate the alarm, keep the “LOCK/ARM ” b utton p ressed for more
than two seconds .
To d eac tivate it, p ress the “LOCK/ARM ” b utton or “UNLOCK/DISARM ”
b utton.
The p arking lig hts will also flash when the alarm i s ac tivated .
Unless a b utton on the remote is p ressed , the alarm will b e d eac ti-
vated after ap p roximately 30 sec ond s. Valet mode
When you c hoose the valet mod e, the sec urity system d oes not op er-
ate. In valet mod e, the remote transmitter is used only for loc king and
unloc king the d oors (and rear g ate on the station w ag on) and p anic
ac tivation.
To enter the valet mod e, op en the d river ’s d oor and keep the
“ UNLOCK/DISARM ” b utton d ep ressed for more than two seconds .
The ind ic ator lig ht rep eated ly flashes two times wh ile the system is in
valet mod e.
To exit valet mod e, op en the d river ’s d oor and keep the “UNLOCK/
DISARM ” b utton p ressed for more than two seconds. The ind ic ator
will stop flashing .

AUTO mode operation:
The Automatic Climate Control system automatic ally c ontrols the air
temp erature of the p asseng er c omp artment in the AUT O mod e. When
the “AUTO ” switc h is p ressed , the ind ic ator lig ht “AUTO ” on the c on-
trol p anel c omes on. In this state, outlet air temp erature, fan sp eed , air
flow d istrib ution, air-inlet c ontrol, and air c ond i tioner c omp ressor op -
eration are automatic ally c ontrolled . ECON (economy) mode:
When you p ress the “AUTO ” switc h while the system is in the AUTO
mod e, it selec ts the ECON (ec onomy) mod e, turning o n the

c omp ressor and fan turn off) when the “OFF ” switc h is p ressed .
When the “OFF ” switc h is p ressed , the outsid e air introd uc tion mo d e

NOTE Setting the light switch to the “p ” or “ a ” position causes the
illuminating icons on the display panel to dim. When traveling with the lights on in gloomy daylight or in twilight, press the OFFswitch for 1 second or longer if you feel it is too hard to identify
the icons clearly. The brightness comes back to normal. n OUT.TEMP switch

The outsid e air temp erature will b e d isp layed for f ive sec ond s, and

sid e air temp erature as its normal ind ic ation if yo u keep the switc h

WARNING
When replacing original tires with winter (snow) tires, make
sure you use only the same size and construction as recom- mended. Using other sizes or construction may affect speedome-ter/odometer calibration and clearance between the body and
tires. It also may be dangerous and lead to loss of vehicle con-trol. You must install four winter tires that are of the same size, cir-
cumferences, construction, brand, and load range. Mixing othersizes, circumferences or constructions may result in severe me-
chanical damage to the drive train of your vehicle and may affect
ride, handling, braking and speedometer/odometer calibration. Italso may be dangerous and lead to loss of vehicle control. Do not use a combination of radial, belted bias or bias tires
since it may cause dangerous handling characteristics and leadto an accident.
Your vehic le is eq uip p ed with “all season tires ” whic h are d esig ned to
p rovid e an ad eq uate measure of trac tion, hand ling a nd b raking p er-
formanc e in year-round d riving . In winter, it may b e p ossib le to en-
hanc e p erformanc e throug h use of tires d esig ned sp e c ific ally for win-
ter d riving c ond itions.
If you c hoose to install winter tires on your vehic le, b e sure to use the
c orrec t tire size and typ e. You must install four w inter tires that are of
the same size, c onstruc tion, b rand and load rang e a nd you should
never mix rad ial, b elted b ias or b ias tires sinc e t his may result in d an-
g erous hand ling c harac teristic s. When you c hoose a tire, make sure
that there is enoug h c learanc e b etween the tire and vehic le b od y.
Rememb er to d rive with c are at all times reg ard less of the typ e of tires
on your vehic le.
Your Outback comes with P225/60R16 “all season tires ” as origi-
nal equipment. You should be aware that some winter tires with that same size designation may actually be too large for the

8-16vehicle and may cause rubbing on sharp turns. Listed below is the winter tire size that we recommend.

Tire chains
CAUTION
Tire chains cannot be used on tires listed below because of lack
of clearance between the tires and vehicle body. P205/55R16 tires for GT models
P225/60R16 tires for OUTBACK models
P215/60R16 winter (snow) tires for OUTBACK models
Driving on snowy g rad es or ic y road s may req uire th e use of tire c hains,
in whic h c ase p ut the c hains on the front wheels on ly. Use only SAE
c lass S typ e c hains that are of the c orrec t size fo r your tires so as not to
d amag e the vehic le b od y or susp ension.
When d riving with tire c hains, d rive at sp eed s b elo w 19 mp h (30 km/h).
When a temp orary sp are tire is on a front wheel, re p lac e the temp orary
sp are tire with the rear tire on the same sid e of t he vehic le, and then fit
c hains on the front tires.
Always use the utmost c are when d riving with tire c hains – overc onfi-
d enc e b ec ause you are d riving with tire c hains c oul d easily lead to a se-
rious ac c id ent. Rocking the vehicle
If you must roc k the vehic le to free it from snow, sand , or mud , d ep ress the
ac c elerator p ed al slig htly and move the selec tor le ver b ac k and forth b e-
tween “D ” and “R ” rep eated ly. Do not rac e the eng ine. For the b est p ossib le
trac tion, avoid sp inning the wheels when trying to free the vehic le.
When the road surfac e is extremely slip p ery, you c a n ob tain b etter trac -
tion b y starting the vehic le with the transmission in 2nd than 1st (b oth for
MT and AT).

Headlight
CAUTION
Halogen headlight bulbs become very hot while in use. If you touch the bulb surface with bare hands or greasy gloves, fingerprints or grease on the bulb surface develop into hot spots, caus-ing the bulb to break. If there are finger prints or grease on thebulb surface, wipe them away with a soft cloth moistened with al-cohol.
