State emission testing (U.S. only)
WARNING
Testing of an All-Wheel Drive vehicle must NEVER be performed
on a single two-wheel dynamometer. Attempting to do so willresult in uncontrolled vehicle movement and may cause an acci-
dent or injuries to persons nearby.
CAUTION
Resultant vehicle damage due to improper testing is not covered
under the SUBARU Limited Warranty and is the responsibility ofthe state inspection program or its contractors or licensees.
At state inspection time, remember to tell your inspection or service
station in advance not to place your Subaru AWD vehicle on a two-
wheel dynamometer. Otherwise, serious transmission damage willresult.
Some states have started using d ynamometers in thei r state insp ec tion
p rog rams in ord er to meet their ob lig ation und er fe d eral law to imp lement
stric ter vehic le emission stand ard s to red uc e air p ollution from c ars. A
d ynamometer is a tread mill or roller-like testing d evic e that allows your
c ar ’s wheels to turn while the c ar remains in one p lac e . Dep end ing on
the severity of a state ’s air p ollution p rob lems, the states must ad op t
either a “b asic ” or “enhanc ed ” vehic le emission insp ec tion test. Nor-
mally, a p ortion of the b asic emission test c onsist s of an emission
insp ec tor inserting an analyzer p rob e into the exha ust p ip e of an id ling
vehic le for a short p eriod of time. States with mor e severe air p ollution
p rob lems are req uired to ad op t an enhanc ed vehic le emission test. This

Replacement of brake pad and lining
CAUTION
If you continue to drive despite the scraping noise from the audi-
ble brake pad wear indicator, it will result in the need for costlybrake rotor repair or replacement.
OM-H0163
The front d isc b rakes and the rig ht sid e rear d isc b rake have aud ib le
wear ind ic ators on the b rake p ad s. If the b rake p ad s wear c lose to their
servic e limit, the wear ind ic ator makes a very aud i b le sc rap ing noise
when the b rake p ed al is ap p lied .
If you hear this sc rap ing noise eac h time you ap p ly the b rake p ed al,
have the b rake p ad s servic ed b y your SUBARU d ealer as soon as p os-
sib le.
Breaking-in of new brake pads and linings
When rep lac ing the b rake p ad or lining , use only g e nuine SUBARU
p arts. After rep lac ement, the new p arts must b e b ro ken in as follows:
n Brake pad and lining
While maintaining a sp eed of 30 to 40 mp h (50 to 65 km/h), step on
the b rake p ed al lig htly. Rep eat this five or more t imes.

Tread wear indicator
A tire should b e rep lac ed when the tread wear ind ic ator ap p ears as a
solid b and ac ross the tread . The ind ic ators ap p ear when the remaining
tread has b een worn to 0.063 in (1.6 mm) or less. NOTE When any of the wheels is removed and replaced for tire rotation or to change a flat tire, always check the tightness of the wheel nutsafter driving approximately 600 miles (1,000 km). If any nut is loose, tighten it to the specified torque.
Aluminum wheels (If equipped)
Aluminum wheels c an b e sc ratc hed and d amag ed easily . Hand le them
c arefully to maintain their ap p earanc e, p erformanc e , and safety.
When any of the wheels is removed and rep lac ed for tire rotation or to
c hang e a flat, always c hec k the tig htness of the wh eel nuts after d riving
ap p roximatly 600 miles (1,000 km). If any nut is lo ose, tig hten it to the
sp ec ified torq ue. Never ap p ly oil to the thread ed p arts, wheel nuts, or tap ered surfac e
of the wheel. Never let the wheel rub ag ainst sharp p rotrusions o r c urb s.
Be sure to fit tire c hains on uniformly and c omp let ely around the tire,
otherwise the c hains may sc ratc h the wheel. When wheel nuts, b alanc e weig hts, or the c enter c ap are rep lac ed ,
