The SRS airb ag c an func tion only when the ig nition

If the front sub sensors insid e the b oth front fend ers and the imp ac t
sensors in the airb ag c ontrol mod ule d etec t a c erta in p red etermined
amount of forc e d uring a frontal c ollision, the c on trol mod ule send s
sig nals to the frontal airb ag mod ules instruc ting t hem to inflate the
SRS frontal airb ag s. Then b oth airb ag mod ules p rod u c e g as, whic h
instantly inflates d river ’s and p asseng er ’s SRS frontal airb ag s. After
the d ep loyment, the SRS airb ag s immed iately start t o d eflate so that
the d river ’s vision is not ob struc ted . The time req uired from d etec ting
imp ac t to the d eflating SRS airb ag after d ep loyment is shorter than
the b link of an eye.
The front p asseng er ’s SRS frontal airb ag d ep loys tog ether with d riv-
er ’s SRS frontal airb ag even when no one oc c up ies the front p assen-
g er ’s seat.
Althoug h it is hig hly unlikely that the SRS airb ag would ac tivate in a
non-ac c id ent situation, should it oc c ur, the SRS ai rb ag will d eflate
q uic kly, not ob sc uring vision and will not interfer e with the d river’s
ab ility to maintain c ontrol of the vehic le.
When the SRS airb ag d ep loys, a sud d en, fairly loud inflation noise will

SRS side airbag deploys as soon as a collision occurs.
After deployment, SRS sideairbag starts to deflate immedi-

SRS sid e airb ag d ep loys ind ep end ently of the fronta l airb ag s in the
steering wheel and instrument p anel.

SRS airbag system monitors

A d iag nostic system c ontinually monitors the read in ess of the SRS air-
b ag system while the vehic le is b eing d riven. The S RS airb ag system
warning lig ht “AIRBAG ” will show normal system op eration b y lig hting for
ab out 6 sec ond s when the ig nition key is turned to the “ON ” p osition.
The following c omp onents are monitored b y the ind ic ator:

In the event of a malfunc tion ind ic ated b y any of f ollowing , the vehic le
should b e taken p romp tly to your nearest SUBARU d ea ler to have the
system c hec ked . Unless c hec ked and rep aired , the SR S airb ag s will not
func tion reliab ly: Flashing or flic kering of the ind ic ator lig ht.
No illumination of the warning lig ht when the ig nit ion switc h is first
turned to the “ON ” p osition.

SRS airbag system servicing
WARNING
When discarding an airbag module or scrapping the entire car
damaged by a collision, consult your SUBARU dealer. The SRS airbag has no user-serviceable parts. Do not use
electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS airbag
system. For required servicing of the SRS airbag, see your near-
est SUBARU dealer. Tampering with or disconnecting the sys-
tem’ s wiring could result in accidental inflation of the SRS airbag
or could make the system inoperative, which may result in seri-
ous injury. The wiring harnesses of the SRS airbag system arecovered with yellow insulation and system connectors are yellowfor easy identification.
CAUTION
If you need service or repair in areas listed below, we recommend
that you have an authorized SUBARU dealer perform the work. The
SRS airbag control module, impact sensors and airbag modules
are stored in these areas.
Under the center console
Inside each front fender
Steering wheel and column and nearby areas
Top of the dashboard on front passenger ’s side and nearby
areas Each front seat and nearby area (for vehicle with SRS side
airbags only) Inside each center pillar (for vehicle with SRS side airbags
only)
In the event that the SRS airbag is deployed, replacement of the sys-

The sec urity system help s to p rotec t your vehic le a

theft. The horn sound s and the p arking lig hts flash if someone attemp ts
to b reak into your vehic le. The starter motor is al so interrup ted to p revent
starting the vehic le without a key.
The system c an b e armed and d isarmed with the remot e transmitter.
The system d oes not op erate when the key is inserte d into the ig nition
switc h.
System operation
The sec urity system will g ive the following alarm i nd ic ations when trig -
g ered : The p arking lig hts will flash and the horn will sou nd intermittently.
In ad d ition, the starter motor will not op erate. The alarm automatic ally resets after 30 sec ond s; ho wever, the
alarm will reac tivate if the vehic le is tamp ered wi th ag ain. The alarm
will c ontinue for twelve times if any sensor c ontin ues to b e ac tivated .
The alarm is trig g ered b y: Op ening a d oor or the rear g ate.
Ap p lic ation of p hysic al shoc k to the vehic le (e.g . b reaking g lass or
forc ed entry). Note that there are two alarm levels for shoc k: warning
and alarm. In warning mod e, the alarm d etec ts lower level vib rations
and trig g ers 2 warning c hirp s on the horn and two f lashes on the
lig hts as a d eterrent to would b e vand als. In alarm mod e, hig her lev-
els of shoc k are d etec ted and the system will g o in to full alarm.

Disarming the system
To d isarm the system, b riefly p ress the “UNLOCK/DISARM ” b utton on

If the horn sound s four times and the p arking lig ht s flash four times
when you d isarm the system, this ind ic ates that the alarm was trig -
g ered . The numb er of times the ind ic ator lig ht flas hes ind ic ates what
sensor c aused the alarm c ond ition.
To enter id entific ation mod e:
1. Op en the d river ’s d oor and leave it op en.
2. Turn the ig nition switc h to the “ON ” p osition two times. ( “LOCK ” 
“ ON ”  “ LOCK ”  “ ON ”  “ LOCK ”)
3. The ind ic ator lig ht will start flashing .
The ind ic ator lig ht p rovid es the following ind ic ati ons.
Flashing one time: Any d oor or the rear g ate has b een op ened .
Flashing three times: The imp ac t sensor in the system ’s unit has
b een ac tivated . This may ind ic ate that your vehic le has b een shoc ked
or tamp ered with b y some outsid e forc e and /or unaut horized p erson.
Flashing four times: The ig nition switc h has b een turned on.
To exit this mod e, c lose the d oor and turn the ig ni tion switc h to the
“ ON ” p osition.

Photosensors
HB6020BA
The mirror has a photosensor attached on both the front and back
sides. If the glare from the headlights of vehicles behind you strikes
the mirror, these sensors detect it and make the reflection surface of
the mirror dimmer to help prevent you from being blinded. For this
reason, use care not to cover the sensors with stickers, or other simi-
lar items. Periodically wipe the sensors clean using a piece of dry soft
cotton cloth or an applicator. nCompass calibration
1. For optimum calibration, switch off all nonessential electrical ac-
cessories (rear window defogger, heater/air conditioning system,
spotlight, etc.) and ensure all doors are shut.
2. Drive to an open, level area away from large metallic objects or
structures and make certain the ignition switch is in the “ON” position.
3. Press and hold the left button for 3 seconds then release, and thecompass will enter the calibration mode. “CAL” and direction will be
displayed.
4. Drive slowly in a circle until “CAL” disappears from the display
(about two or three circles).
5. The compass is now calibrated. Further calibration is not required.
The compass will automatically calibrate from this point forward.
