Fuel gauge
Displays approximately how much
fuel is in the fuel tank (when the
key is in the ON position). The fuel
gauge may vary slightly when the
vehicle is in motion or after
refueling. The ignition should be in
the OFF position while the vehicle is
being refueled. When the gauge first indicates empty, there is a small
amount of reserve fuel in the tank. When refueling the vehicle from an
empty indication, the amount of fuel that can be added will be less than
the advertised capacity due to the reserve fuel.

(Overdrive) can be deactivated
by pressing the transmission control
switch on the end of the gearshift
lever.
Drive± Not shown on the gearshift position display. Activate by pressing
the transmission control switch on the end of the gearshift lever with the
gearshift lever in the
position. The Transmission Control Indicator
Light (TCIL) will illuminate on the instrument cluster. The transmission
operates in gears one through four.
(Drive) provides more engine
braking than
(Overdrive) and is useful whenever driving conditions
(i.e., city traffic, hilly terrain, etc.) cause the transmission to excessively
shift between
(Overdrive) and(Drive). Also deactivate
(Overdrive) when:
²driving with a heavy load.
²towing a trailer up or down steep hills.
²additional engine braking is desired. If towing a trailer, refer to
Driving while you towin theTrailer Towingchapter.
To return to
(Overdrive) mode, press the transmission control
switch.
Each time the vehicle is started, the transmission will automatically
return to normal overdrive mode.
2 (Second)
Use 2 (Second) to start-up on
slippery roads or to provide
additional engine braking on
downgrades.
1 (First)
Use 1 (First) to provide maximum
engine braking on steep downgrades.
Upshifts can be made by shifting to 2
(Second) or to
(Overdrive).
Selecting 1 (Low) at higher speeds
causes the transmission to shift to a lower gear and will shift to 1 (First)
after the vehicle decelerates to the proper vehicle speed.

To avoid possible oil loss, DO NOT operate the vehicle with the
engine oil level indicator and/or the engine oil filler cap removed.
Engine oil and filter recommendations
SAE 5W-30 engine oil is recommended
Look for this certification
trademark.
Use SAE 5W-30 motor oil certified for gasoline engines by the American
Petroleum Institute (API).
Motor oil displaying the API certification trademark will meet all
requirements for your vehicle's engine.
Ford oil specification is WSS-M2C153-G.
Do not use supplemental engine oil additives, oil treatments or engine
treatments. They are unnecessary and could, under certain conditions,
lead to engine damage which is not covered by your warranty.
Change your engine oil and filter according to the appropriate schedule
listed in the scheduled maintenance guide.
Ford production and aftermarket (Motorcraft) oil filters are designed for
added engine protection and long life. If a replacement oil filter is used
that does not meet Ford material and design specifications, start-up
engine noises or knock may be experienced.
It is recommended you use the appropriate Motorcraft oil filter (or
another brand meeting Ford specifications) for your engine application.

Octane recommendations
Your vehicle is designed to use Fuel Ethanol (E85), ªRegularº unleaded
gasoline or any percentage of the two fuels combined.
The fuel tank in your vehicle may contain any percentage of ethanol
from zero to 85 percent or more. Any fuel blends containing ethanol and
unleaded gasoline should be treated the same as ªFuel Ethanol (E85)º
Use ªRegularº unleaded gasoline
with an (R+M)/2 octane rating of
87. We do not recommend the use
of gasolines labeled as ªRegularº
that are sold with octane ratings of
86 or lower in high altitude areas.
Use only the highest quality fuel ethanol to optimize the performance of
your vehicle.
U.S. government regulations require fuel ethanol dispensing
pumps to have a small, square, orange and black label with the
common abbreviation E85 or the appropriate percentage for that
region. Use of other fuels such as Fuel Methanol may cause
powertrain damage, a loss of vehicle performance, and your
warranty may be invalidated.
Do not be concerned if your engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if
it knocks heavily under most driving conditions while you are using fuel
with the recommended octane rating, see your dealer or a qualified
service technician to prevent any engine damage.
Fuel quality
Many of the world's automakers
issued the World-wide Fuel Charter
that recommends gasoline
specifications to provide improved
performance and emission control
system protection for your vehicle.
Gasolines that meet the World-wide
Fuel Charter should be used when
available. Ask your fuel supplier
about gasolines that meet the
World-wide Fuel Charter. In Canada,
look for fuels that display theAuto Makers' Choiceylogo.
