4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as
described in ªRear Seat Outside Passenger Positionsº
earlier in this section. Make sure that the shoulder
belt crosses the shoulder.
To remove and store the comfort guides, squeeze the
belt edges together so that you can take them out from
the guides. Slide the guide into its storage pocket on the
side of the seatback.
Children
Everyone in a vehicle needs protection! This includes
infants and all other children. Neither the distance
traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the
need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the
law in every state in the United States and in every
Canadian province says children up to some age must be
restrained while in a vehicle.
Infants and Young Children
Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles,
they should have the protection provided by the
appropriate restraint. Young children should not use the
vehicle's safety belts, unless there is no other choice.

Each remote keyless entry transmitter can be programmed
to a different mode according to the user's preference.
To change modes:
1. Close all the doors and turn the ignition on. Keep all
doors closed throughout this procedure.
2. Press and hold LOCK on the power door lock switch
on the driver's door through Step 4.
3. Press the button with the lock symbol on the remote
keyless entry transmitter to enter the programming
mode. The automatic door lock mode will remain in
the current mode.
4. Press the button with the lock symbol on the
transmitter again. Each time the button with the lock
symbol is pressed, the mode will advance by one,
going from Mode 3 to Mode 0 to Mode 1, etc.
For each press of the button with the lock symbol,
the door locks will activate in the same manner they
would activate in the corresponding automatic door
lock mode. For example, pressing the button with the
lock symbol on the transmitter to advance to Mode 2
would result in all doors locking and then, only the
driver's door would unlock. For Mode 0, no locking
or unlocking will occur.5. Release the power door lock switch and turn the
ignition off. The automatic door locks will remain in
the most recent mode selected.

the Index.
Delayed Locking
This feature lets the driver delay the actual locking of
the doors. When the power door lock switch or the
remote keyless entry button with the lock symbol is
pressed with the key removed from the ignition and the
driver's door open, a chime will sound three times to
signal that the lock delay mode is active. When all doors
have been closed, the doors will lock automatically after
five seconds. If any door is opened before this, the
five
-second timer will reset itself once all the doors have
been closed again.
Pressing the door lock switch or the remote keyless
entry button with the lock symbol a second time will
override this feature.

Each remote keyless entry transmitter can be
programmed to a different mode according to the user's
preference. To change to another mode do the following:
1. Press and hold LOCK on the power door lock switch
on the door throughout the procedure.
2. Press the trunk button on the transmitter. The horn
will chirp and the transmitter will remain in its
current mode.
3. Press the trunk button again. Each time the trunk
button is pressed, the horn will chirp and the
transmitter will advance to the next mode.
4. Release the power door lock switch.
If your vehicle is equipped with the Driver Information
Center (DIC), you can also program these features
through the DIC. See ªDriver Information Centerº
in the Index.Theft-Deterrent System
The remote keyless entry transmitter will arm the
theft
-deterrent system whenever the doors are closed
and you push the button with the lock symbol when the
ignition is off. It will disarm the system when you push
the button with the unlock symbol.
Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle
Each remote keyless entry transmitter is coded to
prevent another transmitter from unlocking your vehicle.
If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be
purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any
remaining transmitters with you when you go to your
dealer. When the dealer matches the replacement
transmitter to your vehicle, any remaining transmitters
must also be matched. Once your dealer has coded the
new transmitter, the lost transmitter will not unlock your
vehicle. Each vehicle can have only four transmitters
matched to it.
See your dealer to match additional transmitters to
your vehicle.

Battery Replacement
Under normal use, the battery in your remote keyless
entry transmitter should last about four years.
You can tell the battery is weak if the transmitter won't
work at the normal range in any location. If you have to
get close to your vehicle before the transmitter works,
it's probably time to change the battery.
NOTICE:
When replacing the battery, use care not to touch
any of the circuitry. Static from your body
transferred to these surfaces may damage
the transmitter.
For battery replacement, use a Duracell
battery,
type DL
-2032, or a similar type.
To replace the battery:
1. Insert a thin coin into the notch near the key ring.
Turn the coin counterclockwise to separate the two
halves of the transmitter.
2. Once the transmitter is separated, use a pencil eraser
to remove the old battery. Do not use a metal object.

Daytime Running Lamps
Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) can make it easier for
others to see the front of your vehicle during the day.
DRL can be helpful in many different driving
conditions, but they can be especially helpful in the
short periods after dawn and before sunset. Fully
functional daytime running lights are required on all
vehicles first sold in Canada.
A light sensor on top of the instrument panel monitors
the exterior light level for the operation of DRL and
Twilight Sentinel

, so be sure it isn't covered.
The DRL system will make your high
-beam headlamps
come on at reduced brightness in daylight when the
following conditions are met:

The ignition is on,

The headlamp switch is off, and

The transaxle is not in PARK (P).
When DRL are on, only your high
-beam headlamps will
be on. The parking lamps, taillamps, sidemarker and
other lamps won't be on. Your instrument panel won't
be lit up either.When it's dark enough outside, your high
-beam
headlamps will change to low
-beam headlamps at full
brightness. The other lamps that turn on with your
headlamps will also turn on. When it's bright enough
outside, the regular lamps will turn off, and your
high
-beam headlamps change to the reduced brightness
of DRL.
To idle your vehicle with the DRL off, shift the
transaxle into PARK (P). The DRL will stay off until
you shift out of PARK (P).
To turn off all exterior lighting at night when you are
parked, turn off the headlamps and slide the Twilight
Sentinel control all the way to the left When released,
the control will return to the Twilight Sentinel minimum
delay position and the lights will turn off.
As with any vehicle, you should turn on the regular
headlamp system when you need it.
Cornering Lamps
The cornering lamps are designed to come on when you
signal a turn. This will provide more light for cornering
at night.

Electrochromic Day/Night Rearview Mirror
(If Equipped)
Your vehicle may have an automatic electrochromic
day/night rearview mirror. Your vehicle's mirror may
also contain OnStar

controls.
This is the on/off button for mirrors equipped with
OnStar controls.
When this feature is turned on, the mirror automatically
changes to reduce glare from headlamps behind you. A
photocell on the mirror senses when it is becoming dark
outside. Another photocell built into the mirror face
senses when headlamps are behind you.
At night, when the glare is too high, the mirror will
gradually darken to reduce glare (this change may take a
few seconds). The mirror will return to its clear daytime
state when the glare is reduced.
Mirror Operation
To turn on the automatic dimming feature, press
AUTO (or the on/off button for mirrors equipped with
OnStar controls). To turn off automatic dimming, press
OFF (or the on/off button for mirrors equipped with
OnStar controls). The indicator light will be illuminated
when this feature is active.
Electrochromic Day/Night Rearview Mirror
with Compass (If Equipped)
Your vehicle may have an electrochromic inside
rearview mirror with a compass. Your vehicle's mirror
may also contain OnStar

controls.
This is the on/off button for mirrors equipped with
OnStar controls.
Pressing the MIRROR button (or the on/off button for
mirrors equipped with OnStar controls) located at the
bottom of the mirror, turns the automatic dimming
feature on or off.
The mirror also includes an eight
-point compass
display in the upper right corner of the mirror face.
When on, the compass automatically calibrates as the
vehicle is driven.
When cleaning the mirror, use a paper towel or similar
material dampened with glass cleaner. Do not spray
glass cleaner directly on the mirror as that may cause the
liquid cleaner to enter the mirror housing.

If you have trouble programming the HomeLink
Transmitter, make sure that you have followed the
directions exactly as described. The HomeLink Transmitter
may not work with older garage door openers that do not
meet current Federal Consumer Safety Standards. If you
cannot program the transmitter after repeated attempts,
refer to ªRolling Code Programmingº later in this section
or contact the HomeLink Transmitter manufacturer
at 1
-800-355-3515.
Be sure to keep the original hand
-held transmitter
in case you need to erase and reprogram the
HomeLink Transmitter.
Canadian Owners: During programming, the
hand
-held transmitter may automatically stop
transmitting after one or two seconds. In this case, you
should press and re
-press the button on the hand-held
transmitter every two seconds without ever releasing the
button on the HomeLink Transmitter. Release both
buttons when the indicator light on the HomeLink
Transmitter begins to flash rapidly.
Operating the HomeLink
Transmitter
Press and release the appropriate button on the
HomeLink Transmitter. The indicator light comes on
while the signal is being transmitted.
If the hand
-held transmitter appears to program the
HomeLink Transmitter but does not open your garage
door, and if the garage door opener was manufactured
after 1996, the garage door opener may have a ªrolling
codeº system. A rolling code system changes the code
of the garage door opener every time you open or close
the garage door.
To determine if you have this system, press the button on
the HomeLink Transmitter that you have programmed
already. If the indicator light on the HomeLink Transmitter
flashes rapidly for two seconds and then turns solid, the
garage door opener has a rolling code system. In a rolling
code system, the garage door motor head unit must be
trained to the HomeLink Transmitter.
