Warning and indicator lights
Several of the warning and ind ic ator lig hts c ome on
momentarily and
then g o out when the ig nition switc h is initially t urned to the “ON ” p osi-
tion. This p ermits c hec king the op eration of the b u lb s.
Ap p ly the p arking b rake and turn the ig nition switc h to the “ON ” p osition.
The following lig hts c ome on:
Seat b elt warning lig ht
SRS airb ag system warning lig ht
Charg e warning lig ht
Oil p ressure warning lig ht
Brake system warning lig ht
CHECK ENGINE warning lig ht/Malfunc tion ind ic ator la mp
ABS warning lig ht (if eq uip p ed )
AT OIL TEMP warning lig ht (automatic transmission v ehic les)
If any lig hts fail to c ome on, it ind ic ates a b urne d -out b ulb or a malfunc -
tion of the c orresp ond ing system.

When the ig nition switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition, the seat b elt
warning lig ht will c ome on and the remind er c hime will sound to remind
d river to fasten the seat b elt.
The seat b elt warning lig ht remains on for ab out si x sec ond s and turns
off automatic ally after six sec ond s.
The seat b elt remind er c hime will turn off when the d river’s sid e seat b elt
is b uc kled or it will turn off automatic ally after ab out six sec ond s.
SRS airbag system warning light AIRBAG
When the ig nition switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition, the SRS airb ag
system warning lig ht will c ome on for ab out six sec ond s and g o out. This
shows the SRS airb ag system is in normal op eration.
If this lig ht c omes on while d riving or d oes not g o out after the eng ine
starts, it may ind ic ate that the SRS airb ag system is not working p rop erly.

NOTE The reading may change during air-conditioner operation,
door window operation, driving in a tunnel, and so forth. All barometric readings reported in local weather reports are
corrected to a sea-level reading regardless of altitude. The Gauge
Pack displays true local air pressure and hence may differ signifi-cantly from local weather reports (especially at higher altitudes).The barometer is not adjustable. Since air pressure changes with altitude, the barometric read-
ing will vary when the vehicle is moving up or down an incline.For accurate barometric trending, the vehicle should be station-
ary. Altimeter
The altimeter has two mod es, Stand ard elevation mod e and Relative
elevation mod e.

Accessory power socket Electrical power socket located on the left-lower part of theinstrument panel CAUTION
The electrical power socket located on the lower part of the instrument panel is designed to use only a SUBARU genuine cig-arette lighter plug. Do not use non-genuine cigarette lighter plugsor any “plug-in” type electrical accessories in the socket. Doing
so many cause a short-circuit and overheating, resulting in a fire.Refer to the “Cigarette lighter ” section in this chapter.
Accessory power socket in the luggage compartment and dualpower socket (if equipped)
CAUTION
Do not attempt to use a cigarette lighter in the accessory
socket or dual power socket. Do not place any foreign objects, especially metal ones such
as coins or aluminum foil, into the accessory socket or dualpower socket. That could cause a short circuit. Always put thecap on the accessory socket and dual power socket when it isnot in use. Use only electrical appliances which are designed for 12V DC
and which consume less than 120W. Overloading the accessory
socket or dual power socket can cause a short circuit. Do not usedouble adapters or more than one electrical appliance. If the plug on your electric appliance is either too loose or too
tight for the accessory socket or dual power socket, this canresult in a poor contact or cause the plug to get stuck. Only use
plugs that fit properly.

and if they have b een reformulated to red uc e vehic l e emissions.
As ad d itional g uid anc e, only use fuels suited for y our vehic le as ex-
p lained b elow.
Fuel should b e unlead ed and have an oc tane rating n o lower
than that sp ec ified in this manual. Methanol (methyl or wood alc ohol) is sometimes mixe d with un-
lead ed g asoline. Methanol c an b e used in your vehic le ONLY if it
d oes not exc eed 5% of the fuel mixture AND if it is ac c omp anied
b y suffic ient q uantities of the p rop er c osolvents a nd c orrosion in-
hib itors req uired to p revent d amag e to the fuel sys tem. Do not use
fuel c ontaining methanol EXCEPT und er these c ond itions.
If und esirab le d riveab ility p rob lems are exp erienc e d and you
susp ec t they may b e fuel related , try a d ifferent b rand of g asoline
b efore seeking servic e at your SUBARU d ealer. Fuel system d amag e or d riveab ility p rob lems whic h r esult from
the use of imp rop er fuel are not c overed und er the SUBARU Lim-
ited Warranty.
State emission testing (U.S. only)
WARNING
Testing of an All-Wheel Drive vehicle must NEVER be performed
on a single two-wheel dynamometer. Attempting to do so willresult in uncontrolled vehicle movement and may cause an acci-
dent or injuries to persons nearby.
CAUTION
Resultant vehicle damage due to improper testing is not covered
under the SUBARU Limited Warranty and is the responsibility ofthe state inspection program or its contractors or licensees.

NOTE In order to prevent over-revving during acceleration of the
vehicle, the transmission will automatically shift to the next high- est gear if the Maximum Allowable Speed for the current gear isexceeded. Similarly, in order to prevent over-revving during deceleration
of the vehicle, the transmission will remain in the current gear ifthe speed of the vehicle is in excess of the Maximum AllowableSpeed for the gear to which the selector lever has been moved. Driving tips
Always ap p ly the foot or p arking b rake when the veh ic le is
stop p ed in the “D ”, “3 ”, “2 ”, “1 ”, or “R ” p osition.
Always set the p arking b rake when p arking your vehi c le. Do not
hold the vehic le with only the transmission. Do not keep the vehic le in a stationary p osition on an up hill g rad e
b y using the “D ”, “3 ”, “2 ” or “1 ” p osition. Use the b rake instead .
Shift lock release
If the selec tor lever d oes not move from the “P ” p osition with the b rake
p ed al d ep ressed and the release b utton p ushed in an d the ig nition
switc h in the “ON ” p osition, p erform the following step s:

Carry some emerg enc y eq uip ment, suc h as a towing ro p e or c hain, a
shovel, wheel b loc ks, first aid kit and p ortab le p h one or c itizens b and
rad io. Drive c arefully. Do not take unnec essary risks b y d riving in d ang erous
areas or over roug h terrain. Slow d own and emp loy extra c aution at all times. Wh en d riving off-
road , you will not have the b enefit of marked traff ic lanes, b anked
c urves, traffic sig ns and the like. Do not d rive ac ross steep slop es. Instead , d rive ei ther straig ht up or
straig ht d own the slop es. A vehic le c an muc h more e asily tip over sid e-
ways than it c an end over end . Avoid d riving straig ht up or d own slop es
that are too steep . Avoid sharp turning maneuvers, esp ec ially at hig her sp eed s.
Do not g rip the insid e or sp okes of the steering wh eel. A b ad b ump
c ould jerk the wheel and injure your hand s. Instead d rive with your fin-
g ers and thumb s on the outsid e of the rim. If d riving throug h water, suc h as when c rossing sha llow streams, first
c hec k the d ep th of the water and the b ottom of the stream b ed for firm-
ness and ensure that the b ed of the stream is flat. Drive slowly and c om-
p letely throug h the stream. The water should b e sha llow enoug h that it
d oes not reac h the vehic le ’s und erc arriag e. Water entering the eng ine air
intake or the exhaust p ip e or water sp lashing onto elec tric al p arts may
d amag e your vehic le and may c ause it to stall. Neve r attemp t to d rive
throug h rushing water; reg ard less of its d ep th, it c an wash away the
g round from und er your tires, resulting in p ossib le loss of trac tion and
even vehic le rollover. Always c hec k your b rakes for effec tiveness immed iat ely after d riving
in sand , mud or water. Do this b y d riving slowly an d step p ing on the
b rake p ed al. Rep eat that p roc ess several times to d ry out the b rake
d isc s and b rake p ad s. Do not d rive or p ark over or near flammab le materia ls suc h as d ry
g rass or fallen leaves, as they may b urn easily. Th e exhaust system is
very hot while eng ine is running and rig ht after th e eng ine stop s. This
