TEST NS-SELNO START SELECTION MENU
NOTE:The battery must be fully charged before performing any test in this manual.
NOTE:If the engine will not crank or cranks but will not run, be sure to check the Sentry Key
Immobilizer Module (SKIM) for proper communication and trouble codes.
NOTE:With the DRB, attempt to read ECM trouble codes. If the DRB is unable to communicate with
the ECM, perform test NS-2A. If there are any trouble codes present they must be repaired before
continuing with the No Start Symptom diagnostics.
Below you will find a recommended procedure to correct a No Start Problem by symptom. They
should be performed in the order that they are listed.
Repairing a No Crank Condition..............................................NS-1A
Repairing a No Response Condition...........................................NS-2A
Repairing a No Start Condition................................................NS-3A
Repairing a Start and Stall Condition...........................................NS-4A
Checking the Engine Mechanical Systems......................................NS-5A
NOTE:A failed engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor can cause a cranks but will not run or an
extended cranking before starting condition. This occurs when the ECT sensor calibration fails
(sensor indicates engine temp is warmer than actual engine temp) and the ECM cannot command
proper fuel quantity to the injection pump.
NOTE:For all component locations seeGeneral Information Section 4.0 in this manual.

TEST VER-1ANO START VERIFICATION
Important Note:
If the Engine Control Module, Sentry Key Immobilizer Module or Body Control Module have been
changed the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Secret Key data must be updated to enable the
vehicle to start and run. Refer to GENERAL INFORMATION SECITON 8.0 for programming
procedures.
Inspect the vehicle to ensure that all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect
components as necessary.
Inspect the engine oil for contamination. If it is contaminated, change the oil and filter.
Using the DRB, clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's).
Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds.
Attempt to start the vehicle.
If the engine isunableto start, look for any Technical Service Bulletins that may relate to this
condition. Return toDTC TESTif necessary.
The repair is now complete.

8.3 Programming the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module
1. Turn the ignition on (transmission in park/neutral).
2. Use the DRB and select ``THEFT ALARM'', ``SKIM'' then ``MISCELLANEOUS''.
3. Select ``SKIM REPLACED (DIESEL)''.
4. Program the vehicle four-digit PIN into SKIM.
5. Select ªCOUNTRY CODEº and enter the correct country.
NOTE:Be sure to enter the correct country code. If the incorrect country code is programmed into
SKIM, the SKIM must be replaced.
6. Select ªUPDATE VINº (the skim will learn the VIN from the BCM).
7. Press ªENTERº to transfer the secret key (the BCM will send the secret key to the SKIM).
8. Program ignition keys to SKIM (for programming procedure, refer toGENERAL INFORMA-
TION SECTION 8.3).
NOTE:If the BCM and the SKIM are replaced at the same time, all vehicle keys will need to be
replaced and programmed to the new SKIM.
8.4 Programming Ignition Keys to the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module
1. Turn the ignition on (transmission in park/neutral).
2. Use the DRB and select ªTHEFT ALARMº, ªSKIMº then ªMISCELLANEOUSº.
3. Select ªPROGRAM IGNITION KEY'Sº.
4. Enter secured access mode by entering the vehicle four-digit PIN.
NOTE:A maximum of eight keys can be learned to each SKIM. Once a key is learned to a SKIM
it (the key) cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
If ignition key programming is unsuccessful, the DRB will display one of the following messages:
Programming Not Attempted - The DRB attempts to read the programmed key status and there
are no keys programmed into SKIM memory.
Programming Key Failed (Possible Used Key From Wrong Vehicle) - SKIM is unable to program
key due to one of the following:
± faulty ignition key transponder
± ignition key is programmed to another vehicle.
8 Keys Already Learned, Programming Not Done - SKIM transponder ID memory is full.
1. Obtain ignition keys to be programmed from cluster (8 keys maximum)
2. Using the DRB, erase all ignition keys by selecting ªMISCELLANEOUSº and ªERASE ALL
CURRENT IGN. KEYSº
3. Program all ignition keys.
Learned Key In Ignition - Ignition key transponder ID is currently programmed in SKIM memory.
