KeysYou will be supplied with two
master keys.
\f Note:
Ignition switch and steering
lock, stowage-compartment
lock and seat lock are all oper-
ated with the same key.
On request, the luggage carrier
and the topcase can be ar-
ranged to lock with the same
key.

tion and press briefly

the key to the OFF posi-
tion

the steering lock engages

Switch the parking light on only
for limited periods. Note state of

Seat, opening/closingTurn the key in the seat lock
to position 1 and hold it there
 Lift the rear of the seat up and
forwards
– The fuel filler cap, rating plate
and vehicle identification
number are under the seate Important:
When closing the seat, make
sure that it locks correctly!
 Lock the seat in its holder by
applying light pressure

Luggage rack*
d Warning:
After an accident or if the
BMW C1 has fallen over,
check that the luggage sys-
tem is correctly secured.
Max. load on luggage system:
20 kg (44 lbs).
Installing the luggage rack
• Seat the luggage rack in the aperture in the rear of the
backrest
 Seat the luggage rack in the rear anchorage
 Close handle 1 and secure
with lock 2 to prevent theft

 Turn the key in lock 2 as indi-
cated by the arrow
 Raise handle 1
– The luggage rack is disen- gaged
 Hold handle 3 and pull the
luggage rack up and to the
rear to remove

Starting – Riding – Parking
Your first trip
Safe riding doesn't depend on
your BMW C1 alone.
Your own skill and common-
sense are needed too.
The key to genuine safety on
the road is a sensible balance
between the vehicle's technical
features and the rider's skill, so
that together they form a single
efficient unit. Riding safely in traffic calls for a
sense of responsibility to your
pillion passenger and to other
road users.
d Warning:
Do not ride your BMW C1 af-
ter drinking alcoholic bever-
ages. Even small amounts of
alcohol or drugs, particularly
if taken in conjunction with
medicines, will adversely af-
fect your perception and your
ability to assess situations
and make decisions, and also
slow down your reflexes.
Take to the road now by all
means, but think carefully about
everything you do.

Seat belt
Special notes on using
seat belts in conjunction
with a crash helmet
L Note:
The following applies in Germa-
ny, Belgium, France, Italy, Aus-
tria, Portugal, Switzerland,
Spain and Turkey:
You are not freed from your
statutory obligation to wear a
crash helmet unless both seat
belts are fastened.
We recommend that you always
ride with both seat belts
correctly fastened.
National legislation applies in
these and in all other countries.
L Note:
The passenger is not integrated
into the safety concept of the
BMW C1, which means that
– the passenger must always wear a crash helmet.
– the passenger should wear suitable protective clothing.
