17. Measure ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash with a dial indi-
cator.
Ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash:
0.13 - 0.18 mm
(0.0051 - 0.0071 in)
lIf backlash is too small, decrease thickness of right shim and
increase thickness of left shim by the same amount.
If backlash is too great, reverse the above procedure.
Never change the total amount of shims as it will change the
bearing preload.
18. Check total preload with Tool.
When checking preload, turn drive pinion in both directions
several times to seat bearing rollers correctly.
Total preload:
P
1+ [0.3 to 1.5 N´m (3 to 15 kg-cm, 2.6 to 13.0 in-
lb)]
P
1: Pinion bearing preload
Refer to SDS, PD-2014.
Tool number: ST3127S000
lIf preload is too great, remove the same amount of shim from
each side.
lIf preload is too small, add the same amount of shim to each
side.
Never add or remove a different number of shims for each
side as it will change ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash.
19. Recheck ring gear-to-drive pinion backlash because
increase or decrease in thickness of shims will cause change
of ring gear-to-pinion backlash.
20. Check runout of ring gear with a dial indicator.
Runout limit:
0.05 mm (0.0020 in)
lIf backlash varies excessively in different places, the vari-
ance may have resulted from foreign matter caught between
the ring gear and the differential case.
lIf the backlash varies greatly when the runout of the ring gear
is within a specified range, the hypoid gear set or differential
case should be replaced.
21. Check tooth contact.
Refer to ªADJUSTMENTº of original Service Manual.
22. Install rear cover and gasket.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) ``AIR
BAG''
The Supplemental Restraint System ``AIR BAG'' used along with a seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or
severity of injury to the driver and front passenger in a frontal collision. The SRS composition which is avail-
able to NISSAN MODEL D22 is as follows (The composition varies according to the destination and optional
equipment.):
Driver air bag module (located in the center of the steering wheel), front passenger air bag module (located
on the instrument panel on passenger side), a diagnosis sensor unit, warning lamp, wiring harness and spi-
ral cable.
WARNING:
lTo avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN dealer.
lImproper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system.
lDo not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. Spiral cable and wiring harnesses covered with yellow insulation either just
before the harness connectors or for the complete harness are related to the SRS.
