controls for your vehicle. In this manual, you'll find

things quickly.

Safety Warnings and Symbols
You will find a number of safety cautions in this book.
We use a box and the word CAUTION to tell you
about things that could hurt you if you were to ignore

Tow/Haul Selector Switch
Your vehicle is equipped
with a tow/haul selector
switch. This switch is
located on the shift knob.
You can use this feature to more efficiently tow or haul a
heavy load. See ªTow/Haul Modeº in the Index for
more information.
Four-Wheel Drive
Because your vehicle has four-wheel drive, you can
send your engine's driving power to all four wheels for
extra traction. To get the most satisfaction out of
four
-wheel drive, you must be familiar with its
operation. Read the part that follows before using
four
-wheel drive. You should use two-wheel drive (2HI)
for most normal driving conditions.
NOTICE:
Driving in the 4HI or 4LO positions for a long
time on dry or wet pavement could shorten the
life of your vehicle's drivetrain.

2-22 Automatic Transfer Case
The transfer case switches
are to the right of the
steering wheel on the
instrument panel. Use these
switches to shift into and
out of four
-wheel drive.
You can choose among four
driving settings:
2HI: This setting is for driving in most street and
highway situations. Your front axle is not engaged in
two
-wheel drive. This setting also provides the best
fuel economy.

AUTO 4WD: This setting is ideal for use when road
conditions are variable. When driving your vehicle in
AUTO 4WD, the front axle is engaged, but the vehicle's
power is sent to the rear wheels. When the vehicle
senses a loss of traction, the system will automatically
engage four
-wheel drive. Driving in this mode results in
slightly lower fuel economy than 2HI.
4HI: Use 4HI when you need extra traction, such as
on snowy or icy roads or in most off
-road situations.
This setting also engages your front axle to help drive
your vehicle.
4LO: This setting also engages your front axle and
delivers extra torque. You may never need 4LO. It sends
maximum power to all four wheels. You might choose
4LO if you are driving off
-road in deep sand, deep mud,
and climbing or descending steep hills.
NEUTRAL: Shift the vehicle's transfer case to
NEUTRAL only when towing your vehicle. See
ªRecreational Vehicle Towingº or ªTowing Your
Vehicleº in the Index for more information.
CAUTION:
Shifting the transfer case to NEUTRAL can
cause your vehicle to roll even if the transmission
is in PARK (P). You or someone else could be
seriously injured. Be sure to set the parking
brake before placing the transfer case in
NEUTRAL. See ªParking Brakeº in the Index.
Indicator lights in the switches show which setting you
are in. The indicator lights will come on briefly when
you turn on the ignition and one will stay on. If the
lights do not come on, you should take your vehicle to
your dealer for service. An indicator light will flash
while shifting the transfer case. It will remain
illuminated when the shift is complete. If for some
reason the transfer case cannot make a requested shift, it
will return to the last chosen setting.

your vehicle to your dealer for service. See ªService

2-74 Security Warning Light
This light will come on
briefly when you turn the
key toward START. The
light will stay on until the
engine starts.
If the light flashes, the Passlock
system has entered a
tamper mode. If the vehicle fails to start, see ªPasslockº
in the Index.
If the light comes on continuously while driving and
stays on, there may be a problem with the Passlock
system. Your vehicle will not be protected by Passlock,
and you should see your dealer.
This light should also flash as you open the door (if your
ignition is off). This is a reminder to activate the
theft
-deterrent system. See ªContent Theft-Deterrentº in
the Index for more information.
Service Four-Wheel-Drive Warning Light
Your vehicle is equipped with the Automatic
Four
-Wheel-Drive Transfer Case. It has a computer
which controls the four
-wheel-drive system.
This light should come on
briefly when you turn on the
ignition, as a check to show
you it is working.
The SERVICE 4WD light comes on to indicate that
there may be a problem with the Automatic Four
-Wheel
Drive system and service is required. Malfunctions can
be indicated by the system before any problem is
apparent, which may prevent serious damage to the
vehicle. This system is also designed to assist your
service technician in correctly diagnosing a malfunction.

Remember: Anti-lock doesn't change the time you need
to get your foot up to the brake pedal or always decrease
stopping distance. If you get too close to the vehicle in
front of you, you won't have time to apply your brakes
if that vehicle suddenly slows or stops. Always leave
enough room up ahead to stop, even though you have
anti
-lock brakes.
Using Anti
-Lock
Don't pump the brakes. Just hold the brake pedal down
firmly and let anti
-lock work for you. You may feel the
brakes vibrate, or you may notice some noise, but this is
normal. Your anti
-lock brakes work at all
times
-- whether you are in two-wheel drive or
four
-wheel drive.
Braking in Emergencies
With anti-lock, you can steer and brake at the same
time. In many emergencies, steering can help you more
than even the very best braking.

If you lose power steering assist because the engine
stops or the system is not functioning, you can steer but
it will take much more effort.

Driving on Curves
It's important to take curves at a reasonable speed.
A lot of the ªdriver lost controlº accidents mentioned on
the news happen on curves. Here's why:
Experienced driver or beginner, each of us is subject to
the same laws of physics when driving on curves. The
traction of the tires against the road surface makes it
possible for the vehicle to change its path when you turn
the front wheels. If there's no traction, inertia will keep
the vehicle going in the same direction. If you've ever
tried to steer a vehicle on wet ice, you'll understand this.
