1. Turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and unwrap the electrical cord.
3. Plug it into a normal, grounded 110-volt AC outlet.
-
Plugging the cord into an ungrounded outlet
could cause an electrical shock. Also, the wrong
kind
of extension cord could overheat and cause
a fire. You could be seriously injured. Plug the
cord into
a properly grounded three-prong
110-volt
AC outlet. If the cord won’t reach, use a
heavy-duty three-prong extension cord rated for
at least 15 amps.
4. Before starting the engine, be sure to unplug and store
the cord as it was before to keep it away from moving
engine parts.
If you don’t, it could be damaged.
How long should you keep the coolant heater plugged
in? The answer depends on the outside temperature, the
kind of oil you have,
and some other things. Instead of
trying to list everything here, we ask that you contact
your dealer in the area where you’ll be parking
your
vehicle. The dealer can give you the best advice for that
particular area.

the gas cap has not been fully tightened.
You should
recheck your gas cap to ensure that it’s fully tightened.
CHECK OIL LEVEL - 36: For correct operation of
the low oil sensing system, your vehicle should be on a
level surface. A false
CHECK OIL LEVEL message
may appear if the vehicle is parked on grades. The oil
level sensing system does not check for actual oil level
if the engine has been off for a short period of time, and
the oil level is never sensed while the engine is running.
If the
CHECK OIL LEVEL message appears, and your
vehicle has been parked on level ground with the engine
off for at least 30 minutes, the oil level should be
checked by observing the oil dipstick. Prior to checking
the oil level, be sure the engine has been
off for five minutes and your vehicle is on a level surface. Then
check the dipstick and add oil if necessary. See “Engine
Oil’’
in the Index.

If you see 99% OIL LIFE LEFT,
99 percent of your current oil life remains. The Driver Information Center
(DIC) may display a
CHANGE
ENGINE OIL message. Always keep a
written record of the mileage and date when
you
changed your oil. For more information, see the
Maintenance Schedule booklet. If you see CHANGE
ENGINE
OIL, it means that you have less than
10 percent of the oil life left and you should consider
changing your engine oil.
The system should indicate changing the oil between
3,000 miles (5 000
km) and 7,500 miles (12 500 km).
It may indicate changing the oil before 3,000 miles
(5 000
km) depending on your driving habits. If the
vehicle has been driven 7,500 miles
(12 500 km), it will
indicate to change the oil. If you drive in a dusty area, you
should change your
oil every 3,000 miles (5 000 krn) or
three months (whichever comes first) unless the display indicates changing it sooner. The system doesn't check
how much oil you have, so you'll still have to check for
that. To see how,
see "Engine Oil" in the Index. '
When the oil is changed, you'll need to reset the system.
To reset, display the Oil Life Indicator by pressing the
INFORMATION

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine Three important considerations have to do with weight:
the weight of the trailer,
the weight of the trailer tongue
0 and the total weight on your vehicle’s tires.
Weight of the Trailer
How heavy can a trailer safely be?
It should never weigh more than 1,000 lbs. (450 kg) if
you have a DeVille or a DeVille d’Elegance without the optional trailer towing package. If you have a DeVille
Concours, DeVille or DeVille d’Elegance with the
optional trailer towing package, the maximum trailer
weight should never be more than 3,900 lbs.
( 1 773 kg).
These are total maximum weights including the load.
But even that can be too heavy.
If you tow more than 1000 lbs. (450 kg), use trailer
brakes. Be sure to follow the instructions that come with
the trailer or from the brake manufacturer.
It depends on how you plan to use your rig. For
example, speed, altitude, road grades, outside
temperature and how much your vehicle is used to pull a
trailer are all important. And, it can also depend on any
special equipment that you have on your vehicle. The
optional trailer towing package provides the
necessary oil cooler for the DeVille or the DeVille
d’Elegance to tow a trailer heavier than 1,000 lbs.
(450 kg). The DeVille Concours is equipped with this
cooler as standard equipment.
The maximum trailer weight for your vehicle can be
determined from the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight
(GCVW). The GCVW
= curb weight + passenger’s
weight
+ cargo weight + trailer weight. The GCVW
should never weigh more than 8,253 lbs. (3
751 kg)
total loaded vehicle and trailer.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine Engine Overheating
You will find an ENGINE COOLANT HOT, IDLE
ENGINE message or an ENGINE
OVERHEATED
STOP, ENGINE message on the Driver Information
Center (DIC). You will
also hear a chime. There is also
an engine temperature warning light andor gage on the
instrument panel. See “Engine Coolant Temperature
Warning Light” or “Engine Coolant Temperature Gage”
in the Index.
Overheated Engine Protection
Operating Mode
NOTICE:
After driving in the overheated engine protection
operating mode, to avoid engine damage, allow
the engine to cool before attempting any repair.
The engine oil will be severely degraded. Repair
the cause of coolant loss, change the oil and reset
the oil life indicator. See “Engine Oil, When to
Change” in the Index.
Should an overheated engine condition exist and the
message ENGINE OVERHEATED STOP ENGINE is
displayed, an overheat protection mode which alternates
firing groups
of four cylinders helps prevent engine
damage.
In this mode, you will notice a loss in power
and engine performance. This operating mode allows
your vehicle to be driven to a safe place in
an
emergency; you may drive up to 50 miles (80 lun).
Towing a trailer in the overheat protection mode should
be avoided.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine What Kind of Engine Oil to Use
Oils recommended for your vehicle can be identified by
looking for the “Starburst” symbol. This symbol
indicates that the oil has been certified by the American
Petroleum Institute
(API). Do not use any oil which
does not carry this Starburst symbol.
If you change your own
oil, be sure you use oil
that has the Starburst
symbol on the front of the
oil container. If you have
your oil changed
for you,
be sure the oil put into
your engine
is American
Petroleum Institute certified
for gasoline engines.
You should also use the proper viscosity oil for your
vehicle,
as shown in the following chart:

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine As shown in the chart, SAE 1OW-30 is best for your
vehicle. However, you
can use SAE 5W-30 if it’s going
to be colder than 60” F (1 6°C) before your next oil
change. When it’s
very cold, you should use SAE
5W-30. These numbers on an oil container show its
viscosity, or thickness.
Do not use other viscosity oils,
such as
SAE 20W-50.
I NOTICE:
Use only engine oil with the American Petroleum
Institute Certified
For Gasoline Engines
“Starburst” symbol. Failure to use the
recommended oil can result in engine damage not
covered by your warranty.
GM Goodwrench@ oil meets all the requirements for
your vehicle.
If you are in
an area where the temperature falls below
-20°F (-29”C), consider using either an SAE 5W-30
synthetic oil or an SAE OW-30 oil. Both will provide
easier cold starting
and better protection for your engine
at extremely low temperatures.
Engine Oil Additives
Don’t add anything to your oil. Your dealer is ready to
advise if you think something should be added.
When to Change Engine Oil
Your vehicle has an Oil Life Indicator. This feature
will let you know when to change your oil
and
filter -- usually between 3,000 miles (5 000 km) and
7,500 miles (12 500 km) since your last oil change.
Under severe conditions, the indicator may come
on
before 3,000 miles (5 000 km). Never drive your
vehicle more than
7,500 miles (12 500 km) or
12 months (whichever occurs first) without an
oil change.
The system won’t detect dust in the oil.
So, if you
drive in a dusty area, be sure to change your oil every
3,000 miles (5
000 km) or sooner. Remember to reset
the Oil Life Indicator when the oil has been changed.
For more information, see “Oil Life Indicator”
in
the Index.
