Opening pop-up roof, function
19.2.97
MODEL
163 with CODE (414a) Electric glass sliding/pop-up roof
Function prerequisites
D
Voltage not too low or too high
D
Switch-on conditions for convenience control fulfilled
D
Sliding/pop-up roof synchronized
Function
When
switch (SHD, S13/2)
is actuated continuously, circuit 30 is
switched through to the
sliding/pop-up roof (M12)
and the pop-up
roof opens.
The function "Open pop-up roof" is executed as long as
D
switch (SHD, S13/2)
is actuated and
D
the pop-up roof has not yet reached the end position and
D
lock-up is not recognized.
If the sliding/pop-up roof is desynchronized, it moves only in the pop-
up roof direction each time the
switch (SHD, S13/2)
is actuated. This
means that it is possible to move to the zero
position for synchronizing. After successful
synchronization
, the
sliding/pop-up roof can be controlled again without limitation.
Vehicles
up to 11.99:
The power for the
sliding/pop-up roof (M12)
is supplied via a
fuse directly to c. 30.
The power for the
switch (SR, S13/2)
is supplied via the
convenience relay (F1k14)
, which is actuated by the all-
activity module (AAM, N10).
Vehicles
as of 12.99:
The power for the
sliding/pop-up roof (M12)
is supplied via a
fuse directly to c. 30. The power for the
switch (SHD, S13/2) is
supplied via a lead to the
extended-activity module (EAM,
N10/1) , this power is switched through only when the switch-on
conditions for the convenience control are fulfilled and the EAM
is coded accordingly.

Detach nut (25d) and bolt from steering
coupling (25) and pull lower steering shaft
(80a) upwards out of steering coupling (25)
Do not use force as the corrugated tube is
sensitive to lateral forces. Enlarge clamping
groove a little with a screwdriver if necessary.
Installation:
Replace nut (25d).
Installation:
Turn rack-and-pinion
steering to center position and fit steering
coupling.

Detach rack-and-pinion steering (23) from
front axle carrier (1) by unscrewing bolts (23a)
The installed position of the shims (23h,
23i) on the right-hand side, between the
rubber mount and the front axle carrier, must
be observed as the shims are of different
thicknesses.
Installation:
Attach rack-and-pinion
steering to front axle carrier.

Check steering for function and leaks
There is a grease cushion under the cover
cap. A small amount of escaping grease is to
be regarded as normal and must not be
confused with leakage.

2001-04 STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS Starters - 163 Chassis
MODEL IDENTIFICATION
MODEL IDENTIFICATION
DESCRIPTION
Starter is a brush-type, series-wound el ectric motor with an overrunning clutch. Field frame contains field coils
and is enclosed by commutator/drive bushing end frame, which carries pole shoes. A splined armature shaft
carries drive assembly.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING
If starter is noisy, the cause could be bent or damaged gear tooth chamfers on ring gear. This cannot be seen
with starter installed in ve hicle. Activate starter without switching ignition on. Me tallic noise should not be
heard. If noise is he ard, replace ring gear.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
Verify customer complaint by operating system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical
damage. Check generator belt tension and condition. Ensure that battery voltage is within specifications. Inspect
for blown fuses and damaged relays. For fuse and/or relay identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
WARNING:
Vehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before
attempting any repairs involving steer ing column, instrument panel or
related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS (or AIR BAG SAFETY
PRECAUTIONS) and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in
appropriate AIR BAG REST RAINT SYSTEMS article.
NOTE: When the battery is di sconnected, vehicle computer and memory system may
lose data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have
completed a relearn cycle. Radio will not operate until coded. Obtain code card
from customer.
