Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints
(see section 18).
Remove the driveshafts.
CAUTION:
o Do not pull on th€ drivoshaft. the CV ioint may

Pull it straight to avoid damaging the differential
oil seal or intermediate shaft dust seal.
NoTE: Coat all precision-finished surfaces with
clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft
enos.

4. Apply liquid gasket (Part No. 08718 - 0001 or 08718 -
0003) to the head mating surfaces of the No. 1 and
No.5 camshaft holders.- Apply liquid gasket to the shaded areas
Set the rocker arm assemblY in place and loosely
installthe bolts.- Make sure that the rocker arms are properly posi-
tioned on the valve stems.
Tighten each bolt two turns at a time in the sequence
shown below to ensure that the rockers do not bind
on the valves.
Specitied torquo:
8 mm bolts: 20 N.m (2.0 kgt'm, l/t lbf'ft)
Apply engine oil to the threads.
6 mm bolts: 12 N.m {1.2 kgif'm, 8.7 lbf'ft)
Apply engine oil to the thresds.

Inspection
1.Park the vehicle on level ground, and turn off theengine. Allow the oil a few minutes to drain backinto the oil pan so the dipstick will show the actuallevel.
Make certain that the oil level indicated on the dip_stick is between the upper and lower marks.
lf the level has dropped close to the lower mark.add oil until it reaches the upper mark.

1. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm withno load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fancomes on. then let it idle.
2. Connect a tachometer.
Check and, if necessary, adjust the idle speed (see
page 11-220 - 223).
Warm up and calibrate the CO meter according to themeter manufacturer's instructions.
Check idle CO with the headlights, heater blower,rear window defogger, cooling fan, and air condition-er off.
NOTE: (Canada) Pull the parking brake lever up.Start the engine, then check that the headlights areoff.
CO mete. should indicate 0.1% maximum.
NOTE: '98 Dl6Y5 engine - lf the idle speed incress-es to 8101 50 rpm, this means the EVAp system ispurging the canister. To stop the purging temporari-ly. raise the engine speed above 1,000 rpm with theaccelerator pedal, then slowly release the pedal.

clears the mainshaft. then lower it on the transmis-
sion jack.
CAUTION: Take caro not to b6nd tho clutch lin€.

Installation
Install the transmission assembly in the reverse order of
removal.
Before installing, check that the two dowel pins are
installed in the clutch housing.
When installing the starter cable, make sure that the
crimped side of the ring terminal is facing out (see
section 23).
Apply grease to the parts as shown, then install the
release fork and release bearing,
NOTE: Use only Super High Temp Urea Grease
(P/N 08798 - 9002).

mended fluid into the tiller hole to bring it to the
upper mark. Always use Genuine Honda Premium
