OFF (C): This position lets you turn off the engine but
still tuin the steering wheel. It doesn’t lock the steering
wheel like
LOCK. Use OFF if you must have your
vehcle pushed
or towed.
RUN (D): This position is where the key returns
after you start your vehicle. With the engine
off, you
can use
RUN to display some of your warning and
indicator lights.
: START (E): This position starts your engine.
A warning chime will sound
if you open the driver’s
door when the ignition is in the
OFF, LOCK or ACC
position and the key
is in the ignition.
NOTICE:
If your key seems stuck in LOCK and you can’t
turn it, be sure it
is all the way in. If it is, then
turn the steering wheel left and right while you
turn the key hard. But turn the key only with
your hand. Using
a tool to force it could break
the key or the ignition switch.
If none of this
works, then your vehicle needs service.
Starting Your Engine
Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N).
Your engine won’t start in any other position -- that’s a
safety feature.
To restart when you’re already moving,
use
NEUTRAL (N) only.
NOTICE:
Don’t try to shift to PARK (P) if‘ your Pontiac
is moving.
If you do, you could damage the
transaxle. Shift to PARK
(P) only when your
vehicle is stopped.
1. Without pushing the accelerator pedal, turn your
ignition key
to START. When the engine starts, let
go of the key. The idle speed will go down as your
engine gets warm.

Brake System Warning Light
Your Pontiac's hydraulic brake system is divided into
two pats. If one part isn't working, the other pa;t.can
still work and stop you. For
good braking, though, you
need both parts working well.
If the warning light comes on, there could be a brake
problem. Have your brake system inspected right away.
BRAKE
This light should come on
briefly when you turn the
ignition key to
RUN. If it
doesn't come on then, have
it fixed
so it will be ready to
warn you if there's a
problem.
If the light comes on while you are driving, pull off the
road and stop carefully.
You may notice that the pedal is
harder to push. Or, the pedal may go closer to the floor.
It may take longer to stop. If the light is still on; or if the anti-lock brake system warning light
is flashing,
have
the vehicle towed
for service. (See "Anti-Lock Brake
System Warning Light" and "Towing Your Vehicle" in
the Index.)
A CAUTION: -
~ ~~~~ ~ ~ ~~
Your brake system may not be working properly
if the brake system warning light is on. Driving
with the brake system warning light on can
lead
to an accident. If the light is still on or if the
anti-lock brake system warning light
is flashing
after you've pulled.off the
road and stopped
carefully, have the vehicle towed for service.
When the ignition is on, the brake system warning light
will also come on when you set your
parking brake. The
light will stay on if your parking brake doesn't release
fully.
If it stays on after your parking brake is fdly
released,
it means you have a brake problem.
