
Care of Your Cassette Tape Player
A tape player that is not cleaned regularly is subject to
reduced sound quality, ruining the cassette, or damaging
the mechanism. Tape cassettes that are
not properly
stored in their plastic cases away from contaminants,
direct sunlight, and extreme heat may not operate
properly and could cause premature failure of the tape
player.
Your tape player should be cleaned with every
50 hours
of use to provide optimum performance. Your radio may
display Cln to indicate that
you have used your tape
player for
50 hours without resetting the tape clean
timer. If you notice a reduction in sound quality,
regardless
of when the tape player was last cleaned, try
playing a different cassette to see if the tape or the tape
player is at fault.
Tf the second cassette results in no
improvement
in sound quality, try cleaning the tape
player.
Proper tape player cleaning should be done with a
scrubbing action, nonabrasive cleaner cassette. This is a
wet-type cleaning system that uses
a cleaning cassette
with pads which scrub the tape head as the hubs of the
cleaner cassette turn.
To properly clean your tape player,
follow
the instructions with the cleaning cassette. If you
use this type of cleaner, the radio may display an error
and eject the cartridge. This is normal and is the result of an
added feature
in the tape player that detects broken
tapes. If an error occurs, you
will need to insert the
cleaning cassette at least three times to thoroughly clean
the tape player.
You may prefer to use a non-scrubbing action, wet-type
cleaner. This type
of cleaner uses a fabric belt to clean
the tape head. This type of cleaner cassette will not
cause an error,
but it may not clean the tape player as
thoroughly as the scrubbing type cleaner.
A scrubbing action cleaner is available through your
dealer
(GM Part No. 12344600).
Cassettes are subject to wear and the sound quality may
degrade over time. Always verify that the cassette tape
is in good condition and the tape player is clean before
obtaining service on your tape player.
Care of Your Compact Discs
Handle discs carefully. Store them in their original cases
or other protective cases and away from direct sunlight
and dust.
If the surface of a disc is soiled, dampen a
clean, soft cloth
in a mild, neutral detergent solution and
clean
it, wiping from the center to the edge.
Be sure never
to touch the signal surface when handling
discs. Pick up discs
by grasping the outer edges or the
edge of the hole and the outer edge.

Using Foam-Type Cleaner on Fabric
0 Vacuum and brush the area to remove any loose dirt.
0 Always clean a whole trim panel or section. Mask
surrounding trim along stitch or welt lines.
0 Mix Multi-Purpose Powdered Cleaner following the
Use suds only and apply with a clean sponge.
Don’t saturate the material.
Don’t rub it roughly.
As soon as you’ve cleaned the section, use a sponge
Rinse the section with a clean, wet sponge.
Wipe off what’s left with a slightly damp paper towel

Using Solvent-Type Cleaner on Fabric
First, see if you have to use solvent-type cleaner at all.
Some spots and stains will clean off better with just
water and mild soap.
If you need
to use a solvent:
Gently scrape excess soil from the trim material
with
a clean, dull knife or scraper. Use very little
cleaner, light pressure and clean cloths (preferably
cheesecloth). Cleaning should start at the outside of
the stain, “feathering” toward the center. Keep
changing to a clean section
of the cloth.
When you clean a stain from fabric, immediately dry
the area with
a blow dryer to help prevent a cleaning
ring. (See the previous NOTICE.)
Special Cleaning Problems
Greasy or Oily Stains
Stains caused by grease, oil, butter, margarine, shoe
polish, coffee with cream, chewing gum, cosmetic
creams, vegetable oils, wax crayon, tar and asphalt can
be removed
as follows:
Carefully scrape off excess stain.
Follow the solvent-type instructions aescribed earlier.

0 Shoe polish, wax crayon, tar and asphalt will stain if
left on a vehicle seat fabric. They sho~~ld be removed
as soon as possible. Be careful, because the cleaner
will dissolve them and may ca~~se them to spread.
Non-Greasy Stains
Stains caused by catsup, coffee (black), egg. fruit, fruit
juice,
milk, soft drinks, wine, vomit. urine and blood can
be removed as follows:
Carefully scrape off excess stain, then sponge the
soiled area
with cool water.
0 If a stain remains. follow the foam-type instructions
described earlier.
0 If an odor lingers after cleaning vomit or urine, treat the
area with a waterhaking
soda solution: 1 teaspoon (5 1111)
of baking soda to 1 cup (250 1111) of lukewarm water.
0 If needed, clean lightly with solvent-type cleaner.
Combination Stains
Stains caused by candy. ice cream, mayonnaise, chili
sauce and unknown stains can be removed
as follows:
Carefully scrape off excess stain, then clean with
cool water and allow to dry.
0 If a stain remains. clean it with solvent-type cleaner.
Cleaning Vinyl
Use warm water and a clean cloth.
0 Rub with a clean, damp cloth to remove dirt. You
may have to do it more than once.
0 Things like tar, asphalt and shoe polish will stain if
you don't get them off quickly. Use a clean cloth and
a GM vinyl/leather cleaner.
Cleaning Leather
Use a soft cloth with lukewarm water and a mild soap or
saddle soap.
0 For stubborn stains, use a GM vinyl/leather cleaner.
0 Ne\~ur LIS~ oils, varnishes, solvent-based or abrasive
cleaners, furniture polish
or shoe polish on leather.
0 Soiled leather should be cleaned immediately. If dirt
is allowed to work into finish, it can harm the
leather.
